Many large retailers and supermarkets now manufacture and sell their own brand electrical products and domestic appliances - everything from headphones and hair-straighteners to kettles, microwaves and large white goods. As a result, there is a growing job market for product technologists with electrical qualifications to join retailers’ buying departments to work on developing new electric products. There are currently opportunities available from junior level to mid-level and more senior technologist roles.
As an Assistant Product Technologist you won’t need retail experience, just a degree in a relevant discipline, and a knowledge and interest in developing domestic electrical appliances. Assistant Technologists work with suppliers, designers, merchandisers and retail teams to deliver great quality products. If you like working as part of team, enjoy new product technology and are career-minded, this could be a great option for you. Your starting salary would be likely to be around £20K per year, with plenty of opportunity for promotion, job-stability and a definite career path
The more senior Product Technologist roles require an industry-recognised qualification in a relevant area e.g. Electro-technical Services, Electrical Maintenance or Electro-technical Systems & Equipment. An up-to-date knowledge of all prevailing legislation relating to the electrical product safety and an understanding of the technical development process of electrical products. As a product technologist, you would work within the trading team to develop a retailer’s own brand products. You would carry out assessments of new products to ensure safety, legality and fit for purpose. You would also support the buying team with your knowledge of the market, competitor products and their specifications. Again, no retail experience is necessary and you could expect a salary of around £40K per year depending on experience with many opportunities for promotion.
Retailers offer excellent opportunities for you to develop your career and utilise your electrical skills and expertise. Ideally candidates will have an interest in small, large and high risk electrical domestic appliances and will be looking for a new challenge to utilise their knowledge
